Howard - High School Sports Star

Created by Rachel 11 years ago
Howard or "H" as he was known in high school was a legendary athlete in his hometown of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He accomplished a rare feat...lettering in all four sports, baseball, basketball, football and track. He loved all sports, but one of his favorites was football, where he was a runningback with lightning speed. He was known as one half of the duo dubbed "The Mighty Mites." He didn't weigh much in high school, maybe 130 pounds or so, and in football was up against many 300 pound linebackers. This never deterred him and he used is speed and agility to navigate the football field so expertly, that he often angered members of the other team, who were unable to catch him. In one such incident, after a great run, he ended up at the bottom of a pile of players! Even though the play was over, a player from the other team was so angry at him that he punched Howard in the mouth, knocking his front teeth out! H earned many full ride scholarships to colleges all over the country, but as it sometimes does, life takes you down a different path and he chose move forward with his career as a Surveyor. He also excelled in track, setting a record that was only seconds off the Olympic record for the 100 yard dash. This record still stands today! Baseball was also a game he loved to play. His Uncle told H about tryouts for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team and he decided to give it a shot. He did, and was drafted to the team! However, in those days if they found out you had any type of medical condition that might hinder your performance, they let you go. H's love of playing football had left him with a trick knee, that was unpredictable and when the team found out, he was let go. Still an amazing feat to actually be drafted to a Major League Baseball team! It is an amazing achievement when sports writers for the local papers, continue to reference his amazing ability many, many years after he had graduated.
